the worth of risk

“To love is to risk not being loved in return. To hope is to risk pain. To try is to risk failure, but risk must be taken because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing.”  ~ unknown~

_MG_2702 curdie webTo me, the quote is saying, if you play it safe and never take risks, then you will never have lived life to its fullest.

I took this photo of little Curdie on a day when his two brothers left him alone. I watched them leave and when I turned around he had burrowed under his blankie and looked so sad.

hoping without expectation

“. . . when hope is not pinned wriggling onto a shiny image or expectation, it sometimes floats forth and opens.”   Anne Lamott

IMG_0647 8x12 webI’ve read a number of books by Anne Lamott. I now follow her on facebook. I lifted this from a post she made this morning. Just simple wisdom . . .

I took this photo in Carpinteria, Ca. while visiting some special friends – this was while we sat in their back yard enjoying each other’s company on a pleasant end-of-summer day.

“I have seen great beauty of spirit in some who were great sufferers. I have seen men, for the most part, grow better not worse with advancing years, and I have seen the last illness produce treasures of fortitude and meekness from most unpromising subjects.”  C.S. Lewis

This is dedicated to all who have, do, or will suffer – be it emotional or physical.

Photo taken in Atascadero of one of my favorite subjects, the sky – an ever changing canvas that never ceases to delight my eye. It serves to remind me to always look up, and not always down, at sometimes unpleasant surroundings or circumstances.

hold on to hope

“In the depth a light will grow,

A silver shine no shadows know,

Like wings unfolding in the sky,

That circle ’round a gleaming eye,

Turning darkness all away,

Even depths will know their day,

For every shadow has its end,

In light!

Life will return again!”

new every morning

apple-valley-sunsetSure was glad I had my iphone in the car on this day, driving home from the store. I had a hard time keeping my eyes on the road – the sky was putting on such a show! There was more than magic on a morning long ago when Christ rose from death. I have a hard time holding onto much, but of this I have no doubt. That reality has kept me from sinking into an abyss and ultimately has stirred my cold heart back to life.   The quote is by J. B. Priestly

blossoms and blossoming

“Gratitude is the fairest blossom that springs from the soul.”     Henry Ward Beecher

I’ve experienced sorrow too much in my life . . . and have suffered debilitating side-effects.  I believe that a heart of gratefulness can be an antidote that nurtures one’s spirit and  blossoms into  hope.

Flowers bring an element of delight into my environment – these petunias are blooming like mad on my little deck.

no smooth ride . . .

Ours is essentially a tragic age, so we refuse to take it tragically. The cataclysm has happened, we are among the ruins, we start to build up new little habitats, to have new little hopes. It is rather hard work: there is no smooth road into the future: but we go round, or scramble over the obstacles. We’ve got to live, no matter how many skies have fallen.
D.H. Lawrence-Lady Chatterly’s Lover

Dedicated to my daughter Carly. We share a love of quotes, beauty, and the desire to believe there is always hope.
